Lady
MY COMPANION
Rachael Anderson, for her lovely “Lady”
You were there when I was
brought home
You slept by my side and was guardian over me
You were my protector at night
We grew together, we lived together
We went through good fun and sad times
We were more than just a girl and a dog
We were companions
You were my friend
You got sick, old, partly deaf and blind
But it seemed like no matter what,
You were still there
You stood by me
When you got scared, I stood with you
We stood with each other.
We were more than friends
We were almost like sisters, in a way
|
Then one day, because of
your old age,
You got sick, wouldn’t eat.
Your eyes got misty and sad
We took you to the vet.
There was no cure.
We had to let you go
Go above the clouds and beyondI couldn’t understand why, but
I knew your time had come.
I hugged you with tears in my eyes, trying to be brave.
“Good-bye” I said, “be brave and please don’t forget me
Sister, friend and companion
Always, until eternity. This I promise you.”
Now you have left me
You are no more in my hands.
You are in His hands, even though you are not here
Know He will take good care of you.
I still feel your presence in the house when I see a picture of you
Like you are standing beside me, wagging your tail
I know that I have a guardian angel watching over me.
You are my guardian angel, always. We thank Rachel
(13yo at the time of writing this poem)for allowing us to use this Special
piece of poetry |

My husband Dave
and I adopted BILBO BIGFEETS from Heartland in his senior years, on
February 13, 1999. Although his time with us was all too short, the
place he filled in our hearts was and remains enormous. Our "grand old
southern gentleman" was everything a dog should be and more. I was
inspired to write the following lines shortly before his passing on July
8, 2000.

The Old One
I love watching the Old One, asleep in a patch of sun. His nostrils
flare and his paws twitch. His eyes, long sightless, track behind
shuttered lids, sharply focused on the squirrel that he can now find
only in dreams, where his once keen senses are forever young.
I love burying my nose in the Old One's fur. The scent is warm and clean
- a rich and glorious blend of new mown grass, gentle breezes and
sunshine. His scent evokes in me visions of the Old One as he must have
been in the summer of his life.
I love the touch of the Old One - his "Velveteen Rabbit" fur, the weight
of his head on my knee when he is afraid, and the subsidence of his
trembling under my hand simply because I am there for him.
I love hearing the Old One as he goes about his day - his soft steady
breathing when he is deep in slumber - the commanding bark when he needs
just one more ear-rub or the last bite of an apple that he can smell but
no longer see.
Master, thank You for the Old One - he is my teacher, my healer, my
heart. |

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place
called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet
goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special
friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water
and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals that had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.
Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we
remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy
and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special
to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops
and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body
quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green
grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy
kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and
you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from
your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

July 1993 - died May 4, 2007
We
called him our "Big, Happy Mooch" because he was always in the kitchen
"mooching" food. What a guy he was!! Still makes me cry when I type
this...... we were so blessed that Heartland sent him to us! Other
people don't know what they missed!

Miss Shelley
1990? - 2007
Miss Shelley came into
rescue (in 2003) with shelter, vets, and rescue thinking she was to old and
sick to live. She then went to Heartland Rescue in TN and this old stubborn
gal ended up with us in New Hampshire. She was with us for almost 4 years
(making her 16+ years old) before we had to leave her go. She became our
biggest volunteer for raising money for Montana's Precious Gold. We miss
you so much. Mike and Nancy |
